Wasteful Spending

MLB News - Juan Soto signs with Mets - Spittin' Cap

As expected, Juan Soto lands a stupid high pay-day, the largest in Big-4 sports history to jump ship goin' crosstown to the Mets. The richest owner in baseball, Steve Cohen, opened his vault to make Soto the highest-paid player in baseball history with a ridiculous 15-year, $765 million deal that includes no deferred money, and has escalators that can have the deal reach above $800 million when all is set and done. Wasteful spending.

Cohen is giving false hope, in what will likely join a long and building list of outlandish Mets' contracts here in the 21st-century. I could care less about the opt-out options, the deal is beyond outlandish. Soto is a freak at the plate. No question. He was excellent last season in his lone campaign with the Yankees, being a top-5 bat in all of baseball (finished 3rd in AL MVP), while recording a 7+ WAR season for the second time in his 7-year career.

Soto was the obvious gem of this free agent class, as Ohtani was last season, but in no way is he worth that contract... in no way is he worth more than Ohtani. Soto is just a couple of years away (if not sooner) from being a full-time DH, and is simply a 2-tool slugger. Soto is not a 5-tool player, nor a two-way, he's a slugger making Pujols/Cabrera value money. Look how those contracts had aged. This is not a $765M player:

Soto has clutch tendencies, and is a top bat in baseball. Those are the two tools he possesses. Locker-room leadership can perhaps push him to a 3-tool... that's it. Soto has clutch tendencies, which can be a game altering spark... but feel the emphasis on tendencies. Soto's power surge was strong in the 2019 World Series when he helped lift the Nationals, but his power surge slowed down in the Classic with the Yankees last season. Soto and Judge were unable to beat a depleted pitching staff, while Shohei Ohtani had just two hits in 23 plate-appearances (0 HRs, 0 RBIs) for the Dodgers. Mets are over their head with this investment.

Lindor and Soto, worth $1.1 billion to be the star-duo to win pennants over the Dodgers? Oh please. Mets need to win 4-6 rings for this Soto contract to be worth it, as LA needs to win 5-6 (10-year spans) to have all of their outlandish investments make weight. Mets also need to keep building on to the roster; more money to be spent. I don't have the optimism of the Mets fans, who somehow still have it after near 38 years since the last trip to the wonderland. I see this contract with Soto as Carlos Beltrán x7. I won't be convinced otherwise unless the Mets are winning 'ships. Cohen and co. will look foolish in soon time, while Anthopoulos and Picollo look like aliens for the Acuña and Bobby Witt Jr. deals, respectfully. This is nothing but burning money, ironically from the franchise that holds claim to the "Bobby Bonilla Deal". Send those prayers Mets fans.
